Oh darling, haven’t you heard? One blazer, three ways.

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

At one time or another, we’ve all had the problem of a closet full of clothes but  nothing to wear.  Sometimes we use it as  an excuse to go shopping and treat ourselves to something new.  On your next shopping experience, making smart purchasing decisions is clutch in the “I have no clothes, must shop” situation.  Buying one statement piece that can be worn a ton of different ways, on various occasions, throughout the years, is just the ticket we’ve been looking for.  Note: the ‘statement’ piece might not seem like a great investment for those whose main wardrobe strategy over the years has been to focus on accumulating the classics, but just because something is distinctive doesn’t mean it can’t look different every time.

For this post, I am going to take one incredible piece and style it for three separate occasions (work, everyday & a night out on the town).

In look #1, my focus was to take the piece out for a night on the town.  I have paired the jacket with a simple LBD, black clutch, navy pumps and and a cute pair of studs.  When wearing such an extravagant jacket, you don’t want to outdo yourself by adding a ton of flashy accessories.

In look #2, I have styled the jacket for a trendy day at work.  Again, you don’t want to outshine your star piece by incorporating an array of accessories so a simple necklace and metallic bag will just about do it.

For the final look, I have styled the jacket for a casual everyday ensemble.  This outfit can be rocked while you’re taking a walk through a park, shopping in Soho or out to brunch on a Sunday with some girlfriends.  Here, I have paired the sequined-jem with a pair of skinny jeans, simple white tee and some flats.

Even the most stand-out outfit options can be switched around, re-jigged and juggled into a completely new look, it just takes a little finesse and a new setting.  By rotating a piece through several different settings, you’ll ensure it’s worn more than enough, without ever getting stale, haven’t you heard?

Until next time, xx

Oh darling, haven’t you heard? Layering for warm can be a cinch.

As spring is approaching, it is becoming less and less easy to maintain the layering look.  Obviously wearing a bulky sweater over a collared shirt with a scarf and fur vest isn’t exactly ideal for this time of season.  Currently, it is 65 degrees out.  Layering takes your look to the next level and allows your outfit to  better express your true style.  But beware, some pieces can make you look messy and bulky and we don’t want that.  When done properly, layering can help you look slender and put together.

For instance, in look #1, the yellow dress is a perfect color and piece for spring but with the current weather, alone, you’d freeze.  So pop on a textured cardigan.  And by “pop on”, I don’t necessarily mean over the dress; try it underneath as well so that the lace arms stick out.  Innovative, I know.  Now, top it off with a funky jean jacket or blazer and a great belt.  Layering accessories is ideal.  You can never have too many bangles on one arm.

In look #2, I have done a sufficient amount of color-block layering.  If you’re going to go with a basic tank, nothing looks cuter then rockin’ a vest on top of it and then belt it to add a little extra pop.  Top that off with a leather jacket and you’re good to go.

Third, you’d never think to match a statement piece necklace with a more basic one, but surprisingly they go hand-in-hand.  I find that as a scapegoat for dressing down an outfit.  I have paired a classic pleated skirt with a cropped blouse and leather coat.  The finishing touch would be an adorable pair of sandals and yes, it would look positively precious to wear some ankle-high socks.

Look #4 was created in order to spice up your typical going out dress.  Personally, I am not one to throw on a LBD with some pumps and call it a day.  I like my eccentric sense of style and so should you.  So next time you decide to hit the town, try layering your looking with a few small pieces to give it that extra flare.  In this case, a black vest with a pop-of-color belt gives it just the thing to push it over the top.

Furthermore, if you feel like taking risks, try one of the four pieces that I chose as my personal faves (not altogether of course) but they definitely add the little statement piece that you were looking for, haven’t you heard?

Until next time, xx

Oh darling, haven’t you heard? Color-block your heart out.

Color-blocking. A term that is literally defined as wearing blocks of colors. Not my favorite choice, but in some situations, color-blocking is shown through actual square shaped patterns sewed together on dresses/pants/shirts, but that’s the easy way out and who doesn’t love a good challenge when it comes to fashion?

If you work in a creative field then, sure, it’s much easier to experiment with various color combos and color-blocked patterns. But perhaps you don’t and haven’t been able to find satisfying results for a color-blocked day/night out. Try color-blocked accessories. Shoes, scarves, jewelry and other accessories are a huge hit on the fashion scene right now. It’s a pretty easy trend to learn and doesn’t involve a lot of effort and whatever the excuse may be, don’t give up because there is a solution. Alas, there is no need to admire from afar, now you can all participate in the color-blocking trend.

Just a few tips:
1. Don’t be afraid to clash your colors. Back in the day that may have been a big fashion no-no but today, it is quite apropos.
2. The louder the color, the better. With pastels and neon being the “It” colors this season, all the more reason to block ‘em.
3. Do not, and I repeat, do not go over 3 colors when blocking. Three times is always a charm and you definitely don’t want to resemble a Rubik’s Cube.

Above, I have given examples of classy and proper ways to separate your colors.  And remember, when fashion is trying to hit you in the face, I’ll always be there to color-block it!
