The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the thermometer has finally reached 85 degrees. It is Monday morning and you are getting ready for work… what to wear?
Although the outdoor climate might change, the office climate is still professional, and “business casual” has a nice way of confusing everyone. When in doubt, remember that the emphasis on the phrase is placed on “business”.
There is plenty of time for flip-flops, tank tops and mini skirts on your days off. Even if your office isn’t as conservative as a bank, law office, or brokerage firm, professional dress will win clients, gain you respect and help you to feel more confident. If you think Grace Kelly rather than Kelly Bundy, you can’t go wrong.
Professionalism shouldn’t cool down as temperatures rise.
1. Invest in a great pair of low-heeled peep toes or sling blacks, not strappy sandals. Remember though, if you bare your toes, you must have a nice pedicure in a soft, neutral color or classic red. French is out ladies and bright colors are for your long awaited summer vacation. Try Jimmy Choo, and Nine West.
2. Buy a classic wrap dress. Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) coined the classic dress which transitions nicely from day to evening with some well-chosen accessories and keeps you cool in the hotter months. Be sure that the dress fits properly and that the fold of the wrap is wide enough to not leave a gap.
3. Bold florals might be perfect for the beach or lunching with friends by the pool, but the office is best with solids, small prints, and texture.
4. Shift dresses are professional and simple. Attention at the office should be placed on you and your work, rather than your legs or bosom. Knee length for dresses and skirts is best, or one inch higher. Save the mini for the picnic and dance floor.
5. Add chunky accessories. If you want to incorporate some trends into your wardrobe, do it with accessories. Keep to a basic solid palette in a shift dress or a white button down shirt and accessorize with wooden bangle bracelets, a floral silk scarf, or a textured belt. Add a chunky necklace and wear it with simple diamond studs. Be careful not to over accessorize though. One or two great pieces are enough.
Avoid: Low-cut necklines, short skirts, scuffed shoes, strappy sandals, chipped polish, spaghetti straps, sheer tunics, and short skirts.
Professional attire for all months can be found at Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabanna, and Elie Tahari. Is your office business casual? Try a linen blazer from Elizabeth and James. On a budget? You can even find these basics from Pippa and DKNY.
