Oh darling, haven’t you heard? Androgyny is très chic.

Do you ever have to remind yourself why it is exactly that we make fun of MC Hammer’s gaucho pants?  Or who started the rumor that Debbie Gibson’s oversized shirts and round-rimmed black hats were so 1980?  Would you go as far as saying that maybe just maybe, you question those trends for a reason?  Maybe deep down you know those trends never really went out of style, they just got put on hold until they can be thoroughly appreciated again.

Fast forward twenty five years and you will see the iconically stylish and oh-so-trendsetting Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones rocking those same pieces as they paraded through Abu Dhabi.

Now you’re wondering, why is it that we make fun of MC’s gaucho’s but we can praise Samantha’s?  The primary reason is that they were presented in a new light.  Instead of imagining the masculine attire on the male rapper, we now imagine them on fashionable women; which is now considered trendy. Put simply, this fad is called androgyny.

Currently, designers such as Rick Owens, Comme Des Garcons and Rad Houraini are designing collections for women with an edgy, androgynous feel to them.  Basically,  fashion is grabbing feminism by the horns and showing the world that not only were all men created equal, but we can dress like it too.
As everybody who’s anybody knows, nowadays, anything goes.  So why not channel the MC Hammer inside of you and bring back that trend that you once held so dear to your heart?  To quote the late fashion photographer, Cecil Beaton, “The truly fashionable are beyond fashion.”  Haven’t you heard?

Oh darling, haven’t you heard? Snap, Crackle, Pop…of Color

Wake up!  I’m about to give you a quick lesson on how to start your day feeling good and making it last until you crash in your man’s bed that night.  Theoretically, the first thing you should do every morning is make sure you’ve left enough time to take down a good, hearty breakfast.  Personally, I prefer some type of whole grain cereal with fresh fruit.  And if we are going to get more specific; Rice Krispies.  Now, after you’ve had your fair dosage of the snap, crackle and popping inside of your mouth, it’s time to move on to your wardrobe. After all, presenting yourself is way up there in the “feeling good” bible and why not carry your amazing breakfast style into your outfit?  I’m not saying that you should start glueing Rice Krispies to your dress and formulating some type of milk carton headband; I’m simply inferring that you should add a little snap, crackle and pop… of color, to your ensemble.

Being a native New Yorker, I have found that I wear my fair share of black.  Even on my happiest and non-funeral-attending days, I still somehow manage to dress myself in some dark range of colors (if not completely in black.)  On many occasions, all black is deemed acceptable.  Actually, in my mind, I find it highly acceptable on any occassion, but today I am here to change not only your minds, but mine as well.  I have found over the years that although it is a known fact that us “New Yorkers” are happy as clams dressed in what can easily be confused as a jaguar costume (not the car, the animal.)  And even though many will argue that black is in fact a color (I  myself being one of those people,) that doesn’t mean I am not fond of the other little shades attached to my pot of gold.

I find that what differs us from the rest is the way we present ourselves and if everyday everyone in NYC the world was to wear the very same “color” from head to toe, then what fun would that be?  To quote Oscar Wilde, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” So add a little color to your delightfully thrilling lives and incorporate some of it into your wardrobe.  All joking aside, I don’t recommend you coming to work dressed as Rainbow Bright but if you dab a multi-colored clutch or a pair of mental pumps into your outfit, who’s gonna hate it?  Adding the pop of color that we all so desperately need, allows us to stand out that much more and on top of that, it helps us to feel that much happier throughout the day, haven’t you heard?

If you’re having a hard time venturing outside of your Addams Family mindset, then take a look at these picks right from our 72Lux website.  Better yet, check out our own CEO rocking a pop of color in her own, stylish way.

Oh darling, haven’t you heard? Everyone is obsessed with REISS.

With spring upon us, everyone is looking for that must-have designers newest collection to show off, feel oh-so-sexy wearing and strut their stuff confidently in.  Well look no further, we have just the brand that every girl and guy is looking to bring their relationship to the next level with.  Hell, if you play your cards right, by the end of the week you may even be exclusive!  REISS, the brand that has been on the scene since 1971, has caught our eyes yet again with their newest designs and must-have pieces.  Their spring/summer 2012 collection consists of the most ideal colors, patterns and designs.  They are taking fashion to the next level by recreating everyday ready-to-wear pieces and putting their own twist on them.  Thank the fashion gods that the pristine founder, David Reiss, didn’t sell his renown fashion empire to Liz Claiborne about four years ago!

Let’s be serious, if the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) can wear a REISS dress to meet First Lady, Michelle Obama, then you know they have it going on.  They are the perfect timeless pieces that will last you through warm weathers and lavish vacations to come and you tell me, what could be better then a bright sunny day?  After all, REISS has named their collection “The Sunshine Season.”  Haven’t you heard?
